Product Design

Product Design is part of the Technology Faculty. Our teachers and technician are well qualified and have a real passion for the subject. Specialist teaching rooms provide a positive learning environment and pupils have the opportunity to work with a range of materials using both modern and traditional processes.



All students learn about food in Years 7 and 8 with considerable emphasis placed on practical activities. specialist rooms are equipped to provide a positive learning environment. In Years 10 and 11 students  are able to opt into GCSE course.  

  • Designing and making key fobs in wood, metal and plastic – gives pupils the opportunity to  investigate the different properties of these materials and use a wide variety of tools.
  • Pupils investigate ‘smart’ materials, 2d design software, basic electronics in order to design and  make the circuit and casing for a game
  • A focused practical task using manufactured boards to make a ‘noughts and crosses ‘ game  allows pupils to further develop their practical skills
  • Pupils use a variety of wood construction techniques to produce a bookend drawing inspiration  from their favourite book or poem
  • Pupils get the chance to explore industrial processes by working on a mini ‘Production line’ to  make their own trinket box
  • Recap and extend use of the 2d design by designing earphone tidies to be cut on the laser
  • We look at sustainability issues and use a variety of metal working processes including riveting to  recycle cans into tea light holders.
  • Pupils then investigate structures and mechanisms before developing their team working skills in  the designing and making of trebuchets
  • Design, make and package a piece of jewellery. This project allows pupils to use their creativity  and develop their 2d design skills as well as extending metalworking skills ( pewter casting,  enamelling etc)
  • Designing and making USB powered light allows pupils to apply their knowledge of electronics  and practical skills 


Courses Offered


  • Resistant Materials GCSE AQA
Year 10
  • Design and make a small jewellery box taking inspiration from a designer or artist of their choice  using modern acrylic printing and traditional wood construction
  • Pupils will use ‘batch production’ techniques to produce hacksaws with dip coated handles  
  • Design and make a storage unit in the style of the Memphis design group using manufactured  boards 
Year 11
  • Year 11‐pupils work on their Controlled Assessment and preparing for the Resistant Materials  GCSE exam

The department is open to pupils most lunchtimes. Pupils are welcome to embark on their  own projects or simply get help with homework.   

  • External speakers are invited in to talk to our pupils. The talk by young graduate trainees  from ‘Thales’ was very popular
  • ‘Festive make‐its’  which can be completed in a lunchtime. These might be linked to  Mother’s day, Christmas for example. Ideas for ’Make‐its’ are often suggested by the pupils.
  • The department runs a wide range of trips e.g. ‘Girls in Engineering at Manchester  University, Exploring  Structures at Alton Towers, STEM at MOSI, Digital Technology at MOSI,  Mechanisms at Daytona Karting.
