Design Technology is part of the Technology Faculty. Our teachers and technicians are well qualified and have a real passion for the subject. Specialist teaching rooms provide a positive learning environment and pupils have the opportunity to work with a range of materials using both modern and traditional processes.
All students learn in Years 7, 8 and 9 experience a wide range of activities in DT with considerable emphasis placed on practical.
In Years 10 and 11 students are able to opt into the DT GCSE course.
- Designing and making in wood, metal and polymers – gives pupils the opportunity to investigate the different properties of these materials and use a wide variety of traditional tools.
- Pupils investigate ‘smart’ materials, 2d design software, basic electronics in order to design and make a mini torch
- A focused practical task using softwood to produce a ‘treasure box’ allows pupils to further develop their practical skills
- Pupils use a variety of wood construction techniques to produce a phone stand and investigate the working properties of manufactured
- Recap and extend use of the 2d design by designing personalised logos
- Pupils investigate sustainability issues and use a variety of metal working processes including riveting to recycle cans into tea light holders.
- Pupils investigate structures and mechanisms
- Pupils get the chance to explore industrial processes by working on a mini ‘Production line’
- Mini DT GCSENEA project- design and make a piece of jewellery. This project allows pupils to use their creativity and develop their modelling skills as well as extending use of metalworking techniques (pewter casting, enamelling etc)
- DT GCSE AQA
- Design and make a small jewellery box taking using traditional wood construction tools and techniques
- Pupils will use ‘batch production’ and explore the 6R’s thorough making bird boxes
- Develop 2d design skills and understanding of equilibrium through designing, modelling and making mobiles inspired by Flensted
- Practice NEA-Design and make a storage unit in the style of the Memphis design group using manufactured boards
- Year 11‐Students work on their NEA and preparing for the DT GCSE exam
