Welcome
to the Modern Foreign Languages Faculty. French is offered
to all pupils during Key Stage 3. French is started
on entry to the school in year 7.. At Key Stage 4 students
can opt to continue the study the language, leading
to a GCSE qualification or an Entry Level certificate.
Special consideration is given to those students who
may wish to study both languages at this stage.

The examination board used for GCSE is Edexcel and the Entry Level certificate taken is AQA. Students need to
show proficiency in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing skills. Each skill is worth 25% of the marks in
the final examination and the writing element is usually completed as coursework.
The skills acquired through language learning are highly valued by employers in many areas as, in addition to
learning the language, students improve their general communication skills. An ability to use a foreign language
is also highly valued in careers in journalism, law, commerce, teaching and industry.
Many of our students have enjoyed trips abroad to France
and we regularly take Key Stage 4 students to restaurants
such as La Tasca and Café Rouge in order to get a taste
of Spanish and French culture. We invite the Flying
Theatre Company into school to perform in French to
pupils at Key Stage 3. These plays are highly amusing
and pitched at the level of understanding of the year
groups involved.
